Library Card Policy
Effective December 1, 2003, patrons of the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will be required to present a library card at checkout. The card must be up to date and registered in the name of the patron who is wishing to check out library materials.
Who can get a card:
1. Any individual who lives in and /or owns property in Johnston County may obtain a card free of charge.
2. In addition, any person attending school or working in the country may obtain a card.
3. Non-residents may purchase a card for $10.00 a year. Temporary card holders are limited on some services.
At least on of the following items of identification is required to obtain a library card:
1. A valid NC driver’s license with a current Johnston County address or a valid driver’s license with your picture and a document showing present address.
2. A student picture ID showing proof of enrollment (if under 16 years old, accompanied by a parent with a valid NC driver’s license with a correct Johnston County address or a valid driver’s license and a document showing present address)
3. A document showing proof of employment (such as a current pay stub) in Johnston County and a picture ID
Cards remain valid for two years. After the two years, the card can be updated free of charge. A picture ID will be required to update the card.
If patrons lose a card and need a replacement, there is a $2.00 replacement fee.
In the rare event that patrons do not have their card with them at check out, library staff can access the patron’s record on the computer and complete the checkout transaction if the patron has proper identification. Patrons who do not have proper identification with them at this time will be required to fill out a short form with their name, address, birth date, and phone number.
